Standard bearings are typically rated for continuous operation up to 120°C. Beyond this point, bearing steel begins to lose dimensional stability, the retainer can soften, and standard grease breaks down and loses its lubricating film — leading to rapid wear, seizure, and premature failure.
High temperature bearings solve these failure modes through a combination of engineering changes. The rings undergo a special stabilisation heat treatment (S1, S2, S3, or S4 as per ISO designation), extending dimensional stability to 150°C, 200°C, 250°C, or 300°C respectively. The cage is upgraded to brass or steel to withstand elevated temperatures, and the bearing is packed with a high temperature bearing grease matched to the exact operating range — polyurea, calcium complex, or PFPE depending on severity.
